KAREN PERRINE PUYALLUP, WASHINGTON USA kperrine@wa.net
I come from a farming and quilting family in Eastern Washington State. My interest in wild places and the natural landscape begins with the places I knew while growing up. Even though I have been an urban dweller for more than two decades, the forest, rocks, streams, pools and sky are the starting place for most of my artwork. I work both from contemporary photos and from memory, creating places which never were. I am interested in exploring dualities and boundaries in nature as symbols of dualities found in everyday life. Mood, hidden meanings and a hint of mystery are important, as well as patterning, color flow and an element of randomness. Life is chaotic, in more than one sense. I am a surface designer, painting and printing white fabric with dye and pigments, then cutting and assembling into landscapes. I continue to work in the quilt medium because the quilting process brings the cloth to life, creating shadows and texture, warmth and depth.
